Social Engineering vs. Bank

After signing some legal boilerplate and “get out of jail free” paperwork, here’s what we agreed to: Pose as a vendor, enter the facility, plug into the network, sniff traffic, look for login and passwords, then try to become domain administrator of the network….

Within seconds I had a variety of logins and passwords, access to numerous shared folders, data, and administrative accounts.

Read this awesome story about how one network security provider gave their client an extra level of analysis from Dark Reading.

Worldchanging: A User’s Guide for the 21st Century

george | design, technology | Thursday, November 30th, 2006

WorldchangingWired news has posted a review of Worldchanging: A User’s Guide for the 21st Century. According to Wired, this book is “a comprehensive, cohesive vision for sustainability that feels perfectly in sync with the times.”

Science and technology, in particular, factor large in the Worldchanging vision. Carbon nanotubes, smart appliances, wearable cameras and even those dreaded RFID tags all get play. That makes a lot of sense when you consider that at the root of our problem is our insistence on sticking with an outdated infrastructure.

In other words, it’s not just go live in the woods. We get to keep our computers in this not-too-distance utopian worldview. Yay!

iRobot Create, plans for Roomba Hacking

george | hacking, technology | Thursday, November 30th, 2006

irobot-top-view.jpg Taking note from the large Roomba hacking community, iRobot plans to release the iRobot Create. The Create seems to be essentially a third gen Roomba without the vacuum, and a large “cargo bay” for you to stuff with modules til your heart’s content.
This has a lot of implications outside of the Roomba modding community, however. Now that this Roomba has essentially been “kitted” it can be combined with other kits such as the Sun Spot Project. I’ve already got plans for my automated camouflaged graffiti bot 2000. Watchout Walls!

Vista Media Center Remote

Looking a lot better than the remote showcased at Digital Life. The previous design was a boxy, white block of modern ice that looked like it would cut you if you handled it wrong.

BBC - Online video ‘eroding TV viewing’

“The online video boom is starting to eat into TV viewing time, an ICM survey of 2,070 people for the BBC suggests.”

None of my close friends have TVs but they use their computer as their main entertainment source. Now there’s the Democracy Video Platform:

“There’s an opportunity to build a new, open mass medium of online television. We’re developing the Democracy internet TV platform so that watching internet video channels will be as easy as watching TV and broadcasting a channel will be open to everyone. Unlike traditional TV, everyone will have a voice.”

Democracy is available on OS X, Windows, and a variety of linux flavors.

‘Reggie’ Predicts Wii Online by Early 07 and More

george | default, video games | Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime recently gave an interview to MTV News and disclosed some upcoming dates for the Wii.

  • Before Christmas 06 - “special” surprise via WiiConnect 24
  • Very Early 2007 - Online Play - Pokemon Battle Revolution (?)
  • January 2007 - Wario Ware: Smooth Moves, Wii Play
  • March 2007 - Mario Party 8
  • Between March and December 2007 - Mario Galaxy

Nintendo of America’s President also had this to say about the possibility of a Goldeneye on the Nintendo Wii:

“Would I love to see it on virtual console? Absolutely. But there are a lot of issues there,” said Reggie. “Suffice it to say we would love to see it, so we’re exploring all the rights issues.”

In addition, Reggie fielded questions about the lack of meaty titles for the winter, a concern of many Wii owners. He says to wait for Wario Ware: Smooth Moves, Wii Play and Mario Party 8 however, none of these titles are substantial either. It looks like we’ll be waiting for quite a while before we can put away Zelda.
